Spam Assassin Spam Filter

Spam Assassin is the built in spam filter software in your web hosting control panel (cPanel). You have the ability to tighten or loosen how much email gets through this spam filter. When WebTek sets up your website hosting, we automatically pre-configure the Spam Assassin for you. If you want to adjust the spam filter settings, follow the steps below:

Spam Assassin
Login to your cPanel (www.yourdomain.com/cpanel) and click the 'Spam Assassin' icon in the Email Section. This will display the configuration options on Spam Assassin. It should be enabled, but you can disable it if you so desire. It should also be set to auto delete email designated as spam. You can disable this too, but we discourage it. To tweak the settings of Spam Assassin, click the click 'Configure Spam Assassin'.

Required Score
Every piece of email is given a spam score ranging from 1-10. A score of 1, is tight and doesn't let much get through. This could potentially delete legit email that might be incorrectly tagged as spam. A score of 10 is liberal, and lets almost anything through. The score defaults to 5. To adjust your score, type in the new score you want it set to and click 'Save'.

Whitelist
If you notice your spam filter is blocking email from certain people that you really want to receive email from, you can "whitelist them". To whitelist someone, means you are manually telling Spam Assassin that they are okay, and to let their email come through, even if Spam Assassin scores the email poorly. You can enter a specific email address, IP address, or a format like *@domain.com where the asterisk represents 'anything' at that domain name.

Blacklist
Blacklisting is the opposite of whitelisting. If you are getting email from people you prefer not to get email from, you can blacklist them. To blacklist someone, means you are manually telling Spam Assassin to not deliver email from that person, company or IP address. You can enter a specific email address, IP address, or a format like *@adomain.com where the asterisk represents 'anything' at that domain name.

Premium Spam Filtering
If you find the above steps are not enough to combat incoming spam, we do offer a premium spam filtering service for $10/month. Contact us if you would like to sign up for that.
